Meadow Maids
Little Wild Things, Collection No. 5
The fifth painting in my Little Wild Things collection, Meadow Maids is a small gathering of daisies and meadow plants in soft sage, mint and sunshine yellow.
Two large daisies lean towards the light, their dark, inky petals and bright yellow centres standing out against gentle washes of green and pale grey. Around them, delicate umbels and tight little buds rise on slender stems, some reaching up and some quietly wandering off to one side.
Real botanical forms are printed into the underlying layers, then worked over with acrylic, pencil and charcoal. The printed marks keep the fine detail of the real plants, while the painted washes let colour drift through the meadow like light moving across a field.
The painting has a calm, slightly dreamy feel, as though the flowers have been left to grow just as they please.
Running up the edge of the work, written in a small hand, is the line of prose:
“Some things grow sideways.”
Like a thought half-heard in long grass, the phrase is there to be found rather than announced. A small reminder that growing a little off course can be its own kind of beauty.
Meadow Maids is the fifth of eight one-of-a-kind original paintings in my Little Wild Things collection, each exploring the character, colour and unexpected beauty of the natural world.
