Flaming Bloom
Little Wild Things, Collection No. 6
The sixth painting in my Little Wild Things collection, Flaming Bloom is a bright burst of poppies in fiery red, orange and golden yellow.
Tall poppies sway above the meadow, their papery petals glowing in layers of scarlet and tangerine, with tight little buds waiting their turn. Beneath them, printed umbels fan out in crisp black and white, a single daisy turns its sunny face to the light, and slender mint green stems wander down into washes of lime, ochre and soft sky blue.
Real botanical forms are printed into the underlying layers, then worked over with acrylic, pencil and charcoal. The printed marks keep the fine detail of the real plants, while loose, confident brushwork gives the poppies their warmth and movement.
The painting has a joyful, energetic feel, like the moment a summer garden catches the sun and decides to show off.
Running up one of the stems, written in a small hand, is the line of prose:
“Just popping by for a splash of excitement.”
Tucked in among the leaves, the phrase is there to be found rather than announced. A cheerful reminder that a little colour, and a little mischief, can brighten any day.
Flaming Bloom is the sixth of eight one-of-a-kind original paintings in my Little Wild Things collection, each exploring the character, colour and unexpected beauty of the natural world.
